Silicosis
Silicosis is a chronic fibrosing disease of the lungs. It is caused by prolonged and extensive exposure to crystalline silica (dust from sand and rocks). When workers inhale crystalline silica, the lung tissue reacts by developing fibrotic nodules and scarring around the trapped dust particles. This fibrotic condition of the lung is called silicosis. If the nodules grow too large, breathing becomes difficult and death may result. Silicosis victims are also at high risk of developing active tuberculosis.
Silicosis is possibly the oldest known occupationally related disease. It usually affects sandblasters, rock cutters, and miners. Workers who do not handle sand directly are still at risk as the silica dust can become airborne and spread throughout the working enviornment. Silicosis is actually avoidable. Proper warnings and equipment, and instruction on how to prevent exposure can allow workers to protect themselves from this disease.
If you or someone you know has suffered from silicosis, you may be entitled to monetary compensation. Please fill out the form below for a free evaluation of your claim by an experienced attorney. There is no cost or obligation for this service.
