Rhabdo
Rhabdo is the shortened version of the term rhabdomyolysis. Rhabdo is a kidney disorder that occurs when toxic muscle cells are released into the blood stream. Skeletal muscle is damaged, leading to the release of myoglobin (an iron-containing pigment) into the bloodstream. In a healthy body, the kidneys would filter the myoglobin out of the bloodstream. In patients with Rhabdo, kidney failure can result when the myoglobin toxically blocks the kidneys.
Symptoms of Rhabdo include abnormal urine color, muscle pain and/or tenderness, fever, nausea, and vomiting. Several factors may cause rhabdo, including blunt trauma, high voltage electrical injury, and extensive burns. In 2001, another cause was found; people taking the drug Baycol (manufactured by Bayer), prescribed to control cholesterol levels, were found to have a high incidence of severe rhabdomyolysis. Bayer voluntarily removed the drug from the worldwide market and advised patients to stop taking Baycol immediately and contact their physicians.
